buy custom Business and Information Communication Technologies essay
buy custom Business and Information Communication Technologies essay In the face of advancing development in almost every activity in the world, individuals and organizations are forced to rethink their strategies including business and economic strategies. Information is considered an important component for the success of any business in the economy (Porter, 2001). The changes in the business and economic environment posed by the concept of globalization have however presented a challenge on the techniques applied with respect to various activities by firms and individuals around the globe. In response to the changes in the economic and business conditions brought about by globalization and advancements in the information and communication techniques (Hay, 2010), majority of the businesses have resorted to utilizing the strategies that keep them at a pace with technological advancements (McAfees Brynjolfsson, 2009). . Though the entire concept of information communication technology is a wide term, it is used by the businesses to boost the different operations in many ways (Porter Millar, 1985). Some of the ways information communication aid in the operations of the business is through e- commerce or e-marketing. The different technologically related models of the businesses include among others Information Management Systems, Decision Support Systems, Public Transport Management information systems, Executive Support systems, Transaction support systems and many others. In order to understand how information technology is playing a great role in the operations of the business around the world however, it is important to understand that the concept of information communication technology is divided into three broader categories. These categories are namely: information technology which encompasses the computers and other computerized systems, the second category is the communication technology which encompasses mobile and other communication devises technology nd lastly there is the internet technology which encompasses among others website applications and operations. Marketing as the greatest component contributing to the success of the businesses utilizes the three categories of information communication technologies in various ways the marketing techniques which are employed in various firms include advertising. Advertising of the products or services of a business has the effect of increasing the customer base of the business by informing and acquiring new customers while at the same time advancing the strategy of the customer base management by enhancing loyalty and confidence in the prevailing customers to an organization. Communication technology which is a component of ICT comes into play in the advertising operations by way of ensuring the accuracy (Telvinen, 1994), reliability and the speed of the information passed. This is made possible through the efficient techniques like the use of social networking sites to access more potential and current customers a concept referred to as mass marketing technique. Specific customer targeting however is also possible through communications via mobile phones which is a category in ICT. The research which includes market research is possible through the internet and networking technologies Technology has lead to the modification of the strategic decision by various firms. It has increased competition by creating more awareness in the public and to potential customers. The study of the role of marketing aided by ICT in the operations in the operations of a business can also be looked at from an efficiency point of view. Marketing departments in organizations have complicated activities that can only be efficiently undertaken by ICT. The ICT has devised various management models that assist the management of activities in marketing. Some of the models can be replicated in other areas of the business. Examples of the models include the MIS, TPS, DAS, KWS, MIS, DSS, ESS, CSCWS, GDSS and ESS (Asemi Zaverah, 2011). Majority of these models have guaranteed large volumes of data that can be handled at any given time (, the organized manner in which they carryout activities and the reliability of the output that results from such operations carried out by the models. The sales and procurement department have been favored by the ICT where they are able to deliver quality services to the customers, be able to analyze the records efficiently including arriving at the suitable product mix that cab used to access specific target groups as markets of potential markets. Online marketing in particular has simplified the processes of creating awareness to the public and the time used doing so. It is now possible to carry out market research on various places around the world and design a suitable approach to the market at the comfort of the office desk. This is made possible by the availability of data on population dynamics and characteristics on the internet. The online advertising which covers the world wide spectrum creates and leads to the convergence of presences around the world hence increasing the potential market. The availability and use of the internet has however posed significant challenges to the operations of businesses (McAfee, 2010). The possibility of creating unfair competition through dangerous rumors, abuse of privacy policy, ethical standards and legal obligations are some of the problems encountered while trying to utilize ICT in the business marketing efforts. In conclusion, the globalization brought about by advancements in information communication technologies has modified the nature of business operations especially in relation to marketing. The benefits have been growth in efficiency with respect to out put and service delivery, this is though there are considerable challenges in ICT too (Carr, 2004). Internet based MBA programs are not considered as second rate anymore Essay Example
Internet based MBA programs are not considered as second rate anymore Essay Example Internet based MBA programs are not considered as second rate anymore Essay Internet based MBA programs are not considered as second rate anymore Essay In the past, many people considered online courses as a ââ¬Å"second rateâ⬠thing. The reason for this may be that the highest ranking institutions were staying on the side of this market for a long time. But now, things have changed. The highest ranking schools are offering their own online MBA programs and the studentââ¬â¢s experience is better than ever with all the new technologies and the development of it. Just as everything else that is connected to technology needs time to evolve and improve, itââ¬â¢s the same with these online MBA programs. This evolution makes it more and more interesting to be part of the online courses. People that are part of high education are debating over technology issues and how far should technology be allowed to go and influence MBA courses. Both sides have valid facts and discussions. Harvard Business Schoolââ¬â¢s professor of business administration, Clayton Christensen, believes that there will come a day when technology will take over the whole educational system and all classes will be online programs. Another professor from Harvard, Michael Porter, thinks that rather than replacing the old ways and online classes becoming new ways of studying, technology can only be a complement and a useful addition to the whole program. The debate speaks about all areas of studying, but mostly about business education. Technology has come that far that there are no more differences and gaps between in-class programs and online MBA programs. The student experience is the same. University of Maryland and Imperial College Business School both started their online MBA programs globally. One thing that everybody needs to know is that online courses are not a new thing. Some universities have had for around 20 years. Currently, the leading platforms for online education are Coursera and EdX. These platforms are products of Stanford University and Harvard/MIT. One program that proved to be really successful was the one that Georgia Institute of Technology created in cooperation with Udacity. The program was for teaching Master of Science and software engineering. The reason for taking online classes for granted and classifying them as second rate was because in the past, these classes were consisting only of video lectures. Now, the best ones are very interactive with videos as well as assignments and audios. Even in the schools where students are physically present, a lot of changes have happened. Business schools have thrown away paper and pens and students are working on iPads. Students take exams online and get graded online. The materials needed for the course can all be found online in electronic format. Online learning has been very popular amongst people who work but want to upgrade and keep improving but cannot move and live on campus. The same goes for students who live in different countries but want to study on a particular university. In order to have the studentsââ¬â¢ network, LinkedIn, videos and social media are used.

HR MANAGEMENT Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
HR MANAGEMENT - Term Paper Example n is defined as a state arising in processes that are internal and external to the individual where the person perceives that it is appropriate to pursue a certain course of action directed at achieving a specified outcome and the person involved pursues that outcome with vigour and persistence (Robinson, 208). The employees have their own needs hence the plan to interview them is seen as viable so as to be in a position to get their views and ideas about what they think should be incorporated in their work in order to motivate them. The HR department will be in a position to use the responses from the interviews to create a master plan of the following: The plan to rebrand the HR department will be implemented over a period of time and this will be done in stages. The HR manager will be responsible for implementing that action plan and he will get some input from the other members from the same department. All the responses from the interviewees will be taken into consideration so as to be in a position to come up with a sound policy document that can improve the performance of the HR department as well as to improve the morale of the workers. The employees have to be treated as valuable assets to the company and this is the reason why we have to get their views. The interview questions are designed in such a way that they are short and they enable the interviewee to give short and succinct answers. Therefore, it is anticipated that an interview with one employee will take approximately 15 minutes. These interviews are expected to be conducted in five working days so as to enable the department to perform other pertinent tasks in its operations. We anticipate that at least two hours per day from Monday to Friday (8 am to 10am) will be devoted to these interviews and they will be conducted in the boardroom. After conducting the interviews with all the employees, the HR manager will need at least three days to go through the responses by the interviews so as to

More Than Just a Story Essay Example for Free
More Than Just a Story Essay Joanna Barteeââ¬â¢s critical essay of Kate Chopinââ¬â¢s short story, The Storm, maintains that the entire story is an allegorical look at feminism and sexual reservations in the Nineteenth Century. She maintains that the storm is a metaphor for the pent up sexual energy that culminates in an extramarital affair while Calixtaââ¬â¢s husband and son ride out the actual storm at a small grocerââ¬â¢s store nearby. Bartee points out that Chopin was in touch with her own feelings regarding sexuality and through this story she was able to express her views though she chose not to make them known through publication in her lifetime. Freud said that sometimes a cigar is just a cigar; the opposite is also true. Bartee makes an effective argument that her assessment is correct by backing up her opinions with pertinent blocks of dialogue from the story and by simply pointing out the obvious. To begin Bartee says that the title of Chopinââ¬â¢s short story has a dual meaning, and though the tale unfolds during a raging storm, the storm of the title is representative of repressed human female sexuality. While Alcee comes to the home of Calixta seeking refuge from the storm it is more a rhetorical device to enable the plot to unfold as it does. The physical storm is irrelevant to the actual theme, which is sexuality and human desire. Bartee says that initially the story begins with just the facts that can be gleaned from a read, assuming the reader is capable of taking a bit of latitude. She tells us that the two main characters, Calixta and Alcee, were once lovers and have now met in the present time of the short story, during a powerful storm. She is reading more into this assessment than is actually said in the story when she declares, ââ¬Å"â⬠¦Calixta and Alcee, had a flirtation several years before the story takes place, but each made a more suitable marriage to someone else and they have not seen each other since,â⬠(Bartee). It is known from the story that they had a flirtation but as for each making a more advantageous marriage, that seems to be speculation. Joanne Barteeââ¬â¢s essay addresses the title, saying that ââ¬ËThe Stormâ⬠is metaphor for the pent up passions of a Victorian period. It seems logical that this is the case, for the author flaunts it at every opportunity. She says, ââ¬Å"They did not heed the crashing torrents, and the roar of the elements made her laugh as she lay in his arms,â⬠(Chopin II-20), to describe the passion of the two. Then she says, ââ¬Å"The rain was over; and the sun was turning the glistening green world into a palace of gems. Calixta, on the gallery, watched Alcee ride away,â⬠(Chopin III-1) to describe the parting of the two, saying that the storm of passion had ebbed. Bartee quotes critic Robert Wilson as well, saying that Wilson believes, Chopinââ¬â¢s title refers to nature, which is symbolically feminine; the storm can therefore be seen as symbolic of feminine sexuality and passion. â⬠Bartee points out that Claxita is the essence of domesticity as the story opens, totally unaware of an impending storm. This storm will not only be the one of nature but rather the storm of her pent up desires, released when her former paramour arrives unexpectedly. She is sewing, while her husbandââ¬â¢s Sunday clothes are airing out on the porch. Bartee believes this is an allusion to polite and proper society in that Sunday clothes can be taken to mean those clothes that her husband would wear to church, accompanied by his wife and child. Early in her critique Bartee says that the entire short story is filled with illustrations of how the storm is the driving force and main theme of Chopinââ¬â¢s story. She also points out that the story was published posthumously, years later, indicating, perhaps, a reluctance to share her views with a Victorian public, believing it was too graphic to be read with her name attached to it. While it is mild by todayââ¬â¢s standards, at the time that it was written it must have been considered a bit risque to have a woman author put her name to a story to obviously full of not only secret sexual desires and passions but infidelity and adultery. The idea that the storm passes just as the tryst is completed and Alcee is riding way is certainly an indication that the natural storm and the storm of passions, which have obviously been sated, are one and the same. Bartee points out that Calixtaââ¬â¢s husband, Bobinot, wisely waits out the storm at the general store just as he avoids the passions of wife as well. He is aware of what the natural storm can do and does not intend to let it batter him, likewise, Bartee says, he is aware of the passions of which his wife is capable and he does not mean to allow himself to be battered that the emotional storm brewing in his wifeââ¬â¢s psyche. Bartee believes that Bobinot is aware of the situation, though this seems to be conjecture on her part. If this is the case then Bobinot is hiding from the passions of a wife by avoidance, and there is not enough information given to make that claim. Bartee points out the obvious with clarity and most of what she says seems logical, but at this point she appears to be taking a leap of imagination that is not justified by the text of Kate Chopin. Calixta seems content to do her familial chores, tending to her home and seeing to her husbandââ¬â¢s clothes. Bartee says at this point that many of the chores that she has to do are done in obvious frustration and are also symbols of the sexual repression of this Nineteenth Century homemaker. This may be the correct assessment as Chopin says that Calixta, ââ¬Å" â⬠¦ unfastened her white sacque at the throat. It began to grow dark, and suddenly realizing the situation she got up hurriedly and went about closing windows and door,â⬠(Chopin II-1). This, Bartee implies, is the foreshadowing that a bad storm is about to blow, and it may overwhelm her. She is leery of how bad it is going to get and takes some nominal precautions to protect her home from the approaching storm. Bartee does not address the symbolism inherent in the actions of Calixta during the initial meeting of the two former intimates. Alcee asks for permission to take shelter on Calixtaââ¬â¢s porch, but they both quickly realize that such shelter is totally ineffective against the fury of the storm, which, obviously at this point is not only refers to the weather but more pointedly, to the raging emotions beginning to build in the man and woman. When Calixta invites Alcee into the home of her family it is virtually a paradigm shift in her attitude toward both the old flame and to her duties as wife and mother. ââ¬Å"He expressed an intention to remain outside, but it was soon apparent that he might as well have been out in the open,â⬠(Chopin II-5). The two then find it appropriate to ââ¬Ëput something under the doorââ¬â¢, to further isolate them from the outside world. The description of her husbandââ¬â¢s clothing, intimate possessions, which cover and protect a man, are exposed outside the home. There is a real possibility that they can be lost, damaged or destroyed, just as her marriage can be lost, damaged or destroyed by her emotional storm of passion. This symbolism of them hanging outside, exposed to the elements, Bartee says, is symbolic of the danger that Calixta feels concerning the approach of the storm. He husbandââ¬â¢s intimate possessions are in danger of being destroyed or lost. Bartee writes, ââ¬Å"They are in danger of blowing away from the strong winds that are approaching with the storm,â⬠(Bartee). Alcee grabs Bobinotââ¬â¢s pants, which, Bartee says Wilson describes as a subversion of the constraints which Calixta, as a married woman, should be feeling. Bartee likewise correctly assesses the description Chopin gives the reader of symbolically putting away a cotton sheet. This sheet, that covers a marriage bed, is in sight when Alcee arrives, but as the two characters talk, Calixta pointedly puts the sheet out of sight, and, if could be inferred, out of mind. Bartee does not mention that the author describes the view she has of the marriage bed itself and that Calixta is aware that the sonââ¬â¢s sleeping couch are in view as well. This could also be taken as symbolic of the intimate glimpse Calixta is permitting a virtual stranger, an outsider to her family, to have of her home and private life. Chopin describes the scene thus, ââ¬Å" The door stood open, and the room with its white, monumental bed, its closed shutters, looked dim and mysterious,â⬠(Chopin II-9). Barteeââ¬â¢s opinion is that in symbolically putting away the cotton sheet, an object of domesticity, getting it out of their sight, Calixta is now symbolically clearing her mind, removing any obstacles that might stand in the way of the two as they move inexorably toward the inevitable passionate union toward which the story has been leading. Bartee quotes lines from the story saying that not only do the two lovers lack any remorse, they feel renewed and invigorated by their act. Bartee says, ââ¬Å"Chopin writes, So the storm passed and everyone was happy. â⬠Bartee does not mention what seems to be more than a casual comment immediately prior to that line. Chopinââ¬â¢s penultimate line reads, ââ¬Å" Devoted as she was to her husband, their intimate conjugal life was something which she was more than willing to forego for a while. â⬠This refers to the wife of Alcee, who, it seems, although unaware of the details of the tryst and the storm, has profited from it. The fact that everyone is happy must therefore include Alceeââ¬â¢s wife, and she is temporarily relieved of the more mundane of her ââ¬Ëwifely dutiesââ¬â¢. Still, Bartee makes an effective argument that her view is correct by backing up her opinions with pertinent blocks of dialogue from the story and by simply pointing out the obvious. Corporations Law :: essays research papers
Corporations Law Short Anwers a)à à à à à Any entity which is considered a reporting entity is required to prepare a report in accordance with the requirements of the Corporations Law. Briefly explain why you agree or disagree with the above statement. A reporting entity is defined as an entity for which there are users who rely on the financial statements, generated from its financial information, as their major source of financial information . These financial statements are used in the decision making process of both internal and external users, and therefore this information must be both accurate and of appropriate detail. In order for a general standard to be established across the accounting industry, it is important for a set of standards to be upheld by all. Therefore I agree with the statement. Under section 298 of the Corporations Law, it is stated that all companies which are reporting entities must adhere to the accounting standards issued by the Australian Accounting Standards Board (AASB) . The generation of statements of financial position, financial performance and cash flow are all required under the section and they assist in giving an unbiased picture of the companyââ¬â¢s current position. With the use of the International Accounting Standards Boardââ¬â¢s conceptual framework, these reporting entities prepare reports using underlying principles in order to clearly articulate relevant information to those with a vested interest in the business. The outcome will be a reduction in the amount of asymmetric information available to external users. Notable recent examples of falsifying financial reports include One.Tel and HIH. If precise and specific financial reports are not produced in relation to the guidelines set by Corporations Law, it is under the AASBââ¬â¢s jurisdiction to enforce compliance. This compliance allows for a general standard to be upheld on a country-wide basis, and with the introduction of International Accounting Standards in 2005, on a world-wide basis. Therefore, an entity which is considered a reporting entity is required to prepare a report in accordance with the requirements of the Corporations Law. Without the generation of these reports, a logical and comprehensible overview of the business could not be produced and analysed. b)à à à à à On June 28 2004, an advertising agency paid $20,000 for a computer system. The accountant for the advertising agency included the $20,000 payment as an expense in the financial reports prepared for the year ending 30 June 2004. Using relevant accounting concepts, briefly explain why you agree, or disagree, with the accounting treatment adopted by the accountant for the above transaction.

Iran Contra Affair
The Iran-Contra scandal had a big effect on the United States but it had a huge effect on Nicaragua. Through out 1985-86, the Reagan administration was selling weapons to Iran illegally in order to encourage Iran to free hostages in the Middle East. Meanwhile, the Reagan administration wanted to support the Contras in Nicaragua, a rebel group fighting to overthrow the Sandinista government. The administration decided to use the money made from selling arms to Iran, and had it sent to the Contras without passing through the United States. Walsh, p2. ) In this paper, I am going to provide the background of the situation. I will explain how the money from the missile sales was used to support the Contras. I will also tell how everything became public, the end of United States support for the Contras and about then investigations and public hearings in the United States. But finally this paper is about the significance, or impact, of the Iran-Contra affair. The Sandinista National Libera tion Front was founded in 1963.Named after Augusto Ceser Sandino, it was an extreme leftist organization ââ¬Å"of Castroite and Maoist direction. â⬠There were only about 150 members as of 1975, but sympathy was growing. (Times, 1/3/75) By August 1975, the SNLF had ââ¬Å"begun to gain strength as discontent with the Somoza regime [had] spread through the middle classes. â⬠(Times, 8/6/75) By August 1977 according to The New York Times, Amnesty International said that ââ¬Å"there had been widespread abduction, torture and killing of peasants by the National Guardâ⬠during the previous year. 8/16/77) The strength of the SNLF continued to grow. In October 1977, the SNLF, for the first time, was ââ¬Å"joined by non-Marxist opponents of the regimeâ⬠including some conservatives. (Times, 10/20/77) By May 1978 opposition groups, including the SNLF, were proposing a coalition government that would exclude Somoza. (Times, 5/1/78) By November 1978, the Carter Administr ation was trying to push Somoza ââ¬Å"into a compromise with his opponents. â⬠(Times, 11/21/78) After 4 years of growing violence, including street fighting in the capitol, Somoza finally resigned. 9/17/79) After the Sandinistas took power in 1979, the remnants of Somozaââ¬â¢s National Guard scattered. As Kornbluh and Byrne describes The Iran Contra Scandal, they were reduced to small bands of some 250 men, hiding in Honduras and Guatemala, where they resorted to random violence and stealing to survive. The CIA brought these small groups together. After the Contras started receiving money from the CIA, the number of attacks on the Sandinistas increased a lot. Attacks during this period included, sabotage of highway bridges, sniper fire on small military patrols, the burning of customs warehouses and crops, and ââ¬Ëthe assassination of minor government officialsââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬ ( Kornbluh, p. 2; they are quoting from a document in the National Security Archives). On Decemb er 1, 1981, President Ronald Reagan signed a finding allowing our government to help the Contras. Beginning in March 1982, the whole thing became public as articles in the Nation, the New York Times, the Washington Post and Newsweek reported on CIA aid to the Contras.Congress reacted to this by passing the Boland Amendment, which read: None of the funds in this Act may be used by the Central Intelligence Agency of or the Department of Defense to furnish military equipment, military training or advice, or other support for military activities, to any group or individual, not part of a countryââ¬â¢s armed forces, for the purpose of overthrowing the government of Nicaragua or provoking a military exchange between Nicaragua and Honduras. (Kornbluh, p. ) In spite of this, the Reagan Administration continued to aid the Contras, all the time denying that they were doing so. Among the aid they sent was the Psychological Operations in Guerrilla Warfare training manual, referred to by thos e who knew about it as the ââ¬Å"murder manual. â⬠(Kornbluh, p. 2) The Reagan administration later on came up with a new strategy, to portray the Contras as freedom fighters and the Sandinistas as oppressors. In 1984, the CIA sowed mines in a major port in Nicaragua causing a severe amount of damage. The Contras took credit for this. But a few weeks later the press exposed the CIA involvement. In response, Congress passed a second Boland Amendment, which said that neither the CIA nor the Defense Department could fund the Contras, either directly or indirectly. From then on the administration worked through the National Security Council, and NSC staff member Oliver North. NSC William Clark established Office of Public Diplomacy for Latin America and the Caribbean (housed in State Department but reported to the NSC), Oliver North attended the meetings: responsible for all Contra affairs.Because the CIA was prohibited from operating inside the United States, Director William Case y had senior propaganda specialist Walter Raymond transferred to the NSC. As Raymond declared, his job was to ââ¬Å"concentrate on gluing black hats on Sandinistas and white hats on Contras. â⬠(Kornbluh, p. 5) All this time, CIA intelligence analysts were saying that the Contras couldnââ¬â¢t win, even with American support. Robert Owen, Oliver Northââ¬â¢s personal intermediary with the Contras is quoted as saying they were simply ââ¬Å"profiteers. 1 Meanwhile, during 1985-86, as mentioned earlier, the Reagan administration was selling weapons to Iran illegally in order to encourage Iran to free hostages in the Middle East. After the 1979 hostage situation at the United States Embassy in Tehran, Carter had imposed an embargo on selling weapons to Iran. When Reagan came to power in 1981, the Embassy hostages were freed, but Reagan continued the embargo policy. In 1983, the administration strengthened it through operation STAUNCH, a worldwide voluntary arms embargo agains t Tehran. But for several reasons, some people in the administration supported softening the stance toward Iran. The idea that selling weapons would help win the release of hostages encouraged them to act. The way the United States diverted the funds is complex. Basically, the United States sold arms to Iran, hoping to get hostages freed, then used the money they got to arm and support the Contras. All of this was done secretly. On October 5th, 1986, an American plane was shot down by Sandinistas over southern Nicaragua. The two pilots were killed, but the ââ¬Å"cargo kicker,â⬠Eugene Hasenfus, parachuted out and was captured by Sandinista soldiers. He told the Sandinistas everything he know about United States involvement with the contras. The next day, the story was on the front page of every major United States newspaper. Then, on November 3rd, 1986, a Lebanese paper published a story that revealed the United States trading of arms for hostages. (historycommons. org, p. 1) Ha ving these two pieces of the puzzle soon led to people discovering the connections between the arms-for-hostages deals and secret aid for the Contras. Once the Iran-Contra connection had become public, Reagan appointed John Tower, Edmund Muskie and Brent Scowcroft to a President's Special Review Board charged with investigating the affair.People expected the Tower Commission to be a whitewash, but its report brought to light many of the details of what had happened. On November 26, 1986, Attorney General Edwin Meese ordered the FBI to begin an investigation of the Iran-Contra episode. December 19, 1986, Lawrence E. Walsh was named to the Office of Independent Counsel to take over that investigation. The Tower Commission, congressional investigations and the work of the Independent Counsel led to indictments of Oliver North and John Poindexter on March 16, 1988.North was convicted on charges of obstruction of justice, misleading Congress, and accepting an illegal gratuity, but an app eals court overturned the verdict because testimony to Congress given under immunity might have affected his trial. Poindexter was also convicted and his convictions overturned on appeal. (Kornbluh, p. xxviii) In 1992, George H. W. Bush pardoned six others who had been indicted or convicted of crimes in the affair. The Iran-Contra affair made the United States look untrustworthy internationally, as well as causing people to distrust their government. The United States government depends on a system of checks and balances among the congress, executive and judicial branches. If the executive branch does whatever it wants and hides its actions from the congress, then the people are no longer in charge of their government. This is a genuine threat to democracy. When Somoza resigned in 1979, the Sandinistas and others who had opposed Somoza formed a junta to govern until there were elections. The country was a mess. There was poverty, malnutrition, disease, pollution from pesticides, fact ory runoff and raw sewage into Lake Managua. The Sandinistas tried to address these problems and might have succeeded if the Contras had not undermined a lot of what they did. Money from Cuba and Eastern Europe was spent on building up an army to combat the Contras instead of being used for other important needs. The Sandinistas won an election in 1984 with 67% of the vote; most international observers deemed the elections fair. Exhaustion on both sides, fear of losing to the Contras, and mediation by other governments in the area led to the ââ¬Å"Sapoa ceasefireâ⬠between the Sandinistas and the Contras on March 23, 1988.In the elections that followed in February 1991, the Sandinistas, who were expected to win, were soundly defeated. A comparison of the poems ââ¬ËA London Feteââ¬â¢ by George Patmore and ââ¬ËClever Tom Clinch Going to be Hangedââ¬â¢ by Jonathan Swift Essay
The two poems ââ¬ËA London Feteââ¬â¢ by Coventry Patmore and ââ¬ËClever Tom Clinch Going to be Hangedââ¬â¢ by the poet Jonathan Swift both share the theme and the horror of public execution, although each poem has a different focus point. ââ¬ËA London Feteââ¬â¢ concentrates on the impression the impression that the crowd watching the execution gives to the poet. It expresses the horror that the poet experiences as she watches the crowds attitude towards the execution. The very negative language of the poet expresses how she felt, ââ¬Å"Thousands of eyeballs, lit with hellâ⬠¦as when the realm of the damned rejoiced at winning a soul to its will,â⬠compares the event as a vision of hell. The poet describes the crowd as a ââ¬Å"rabbleâ⬠an uncontrollable force almost like a mob, an evil atmosphere ââ¬Å"as mothers held up their babes to see, who spread their hands and crowed with glee,â⬠everyone in the rabble is involved almost as if they were all one person, all enjoying the entertainment, as it was called during the Pre 20th Century. A crowd would gather around Newgateââ¬â¢s prison, which was a prison in London like death row, during the 1800ââ¬â¢s many would have seen the spectacle of a prisoner being brought forth to the hangmanââ¬â¢s rope. For many of the people gathered it would have been a form of entertainment almost like a day out and many people would have gathered for the event, waiting with baited breaths. Anticipation rises as the crowd wait for the ââ¬Ëshowââ¬â¢ to begin ââ¬Å"thousands of breasts beat horrid upon hopeâ⬠depicts how the crowd waited and as more anticipation rose in the already tense atmosphere. ââ¬Å"Blasphemed and fought for places,â⬠describes how everyone wanted a place from which to watch. ââ¬Å"To windows, where, in freedom sweet, others enjoyed the wicked treat,â⬠illustrates how much the people in the crowd enjoyed it, as does ââ¬Å"Thousands of eyeballs, lit with hell. Burnt one way all, to see the rope unslacken as the platform fellâ⬠this also shows us that the crowd gathered all stared intently as if they were all one single person. Yet with all the many people there ââ¬Å"a man with yelling tired, stopped, and the culprits crime inquiredâ⬠the use of vocabulary chosen shows that even though there is a large rabble gathered nobody there at the time knows neither who the ââ¬Å"damned manâ⬠is nor the culprits crime was. It didnââ¬â¢t matter about the name of the man, if he had a family or not, even whether he was innocent or guilty, no respect was given to the condemned man. ââ¬Å"The rope flew tight,â⬠the waitings over, ââ¬Å"and then the roar, Burst forth afresh; less loud, but more confused and affrighting.â⬠the crowd has lost its unity, its roar. The use of the word ââ¬Å"common din, the chaos of noisesâ⬠illustrates the use of how the author describes the pre-hanging scene. ââ¬Å"Clattering and clanging of hateful voices, sickening and stunned the air,â⬠depicts just how much the poet sees the crowd as sinners during this very religious time. ââ¬Å"A thief slunk off with ample spoil, to ply elsewhere his daily toil,â⬠this line tells us that although Public execution was designed to deterrent others from committing crimes others pocketed from the crowd, stealing money, this suggests that the supposed deterrent actually had little effect. ââ¬Å"A baby strung its doll to a stick; a mother praised the pretty trickâ⬠¦. two children caught and hung a cat,â⬠Copying the event and the praise received shows that the people considered it to almost be like a show and how it influenced childrenââ¬â¢s lives even how the children saw of it as a game instead of the dramatic loss of human life. Adults had been little affected even after seeing something so awful ââ¬Å"Two friends went off, in lively chatâ⬠Basically it was part of normal life during that time. The poetsââ¬â¢ use of language reflects on how she saw the event, its personal, and her view of the crowd as she watched the horrid event and the people almost as bad as the criminals himself. The title itself appears to have a sarcastic tone usually a fete would be a celebration. The poem appears also to be very realistic and quite dramatic with a sinister mood as the crowd is not in anyway sympathetic towards the criminal. ââ¬ËClever Tom Clinch Going to be Hangedââ¬â¢ is also an ironic title seeing as if Tom Clinch was clever then he would never have been caught and the poem also has a comedy feel towards the theme of public execution.

Auschwitz Facts
Auschwitz Facts Auschwitz, the largest and deadliest camp in the Nazi concentration and death camp system, was located in and around the small town of Oswiecim, Poland (37 miles west of Krakow).à The complex consisted of three large camps and 45 smaller sub-camps.à The Main Camp, also known as Auschwitz I, was established in April 1940 and was primarily used to house prisoners who were forced laborers.à Auschwitz-Birkenau, also known as Auschwitz II, was located less than two miles away.à It was established in October 1941 and was used as both a concentration and death camp.à Buna-Monowitz, also known as Auschwitz III and ââ¬Å"Buna,â⬠was established in October 1942.à Its purpose was to house laborers for neighboring industrial facilities.à In total, it is estimated that 1.1 million of the 1.3 million individuals deported to Auschwitz were killed.à The Soviet Army liberated the Auschwitz complex on January 27, 1945. Auschwitz I ââ¬â Main Camp The initial environs where the camp was created had formerly been a Polish army barracks. The first prisoners were primarily Germans, transferred from the Sachsenhausen Camp (near Berlin) and Polish political prisoners transferred from Dachau and Tarnow.Auschwitz I had a single gas chamber and crematorium; however, it was not heavily utilized.à After Auschwitz-Birkenau became operational, the facility was turned into a bomb shelter for Nazi officials who were located in offices in the vicinity. At its peak, Auschwitz I contained over 18,000 prisoners ââ¬â mostly men.Prisoners in all of the Auschwitz camps were forced to wear striped attire and have their heads shaved.à The latter was presumably for sanitation but also served the purpose of dehumanizing the victims.à As the Eastern Front came closer, the striped uniforms often fell by the wayside and other attire was substituted. All of the Auschwitz camps implemented a tattoo system for prisoners who remained in the camp syste m.à This differed from other camps which often required the number on the uniform only. Block 10 was known as the ââ¬Å"Krankenbauâ⬠or hospital barrack.à It had blacked out windows on the first floor to hide evidence of medical experiments that were being performed on prisoners within the building by doctors such as Josef Mengele and Carl Clauberg.Block 11 was the camp prison.à The basement contained the first experimental gas chamber, which was tested on Soviet prisoners of war.à Between Blocks 10 and 11, a closed courtyard contained an execution wall (the ââ¬Å"Black Wallâ⬠), where prisoners were shot. The infamous ââ¬Å"Arbeit Macht Freiâ⬠(ââ¬Å"Work Shall Set You Freeâ⬠) gate stands at the entrance of Auschwitz I.Camp Commandant Rudolf Hoess was hanged just outside Auschwitz I on April 16, 1947. Auschwitz II Auschwitz Birkenau Built in an open, swampy field less than two miles from Auschwitz I and across the main set of railroad tracks.Construction on the camp initially began in October 1941 with the initial intended purpose of being a camp for 125,000 prisoners of war.Birkenau had approximately 1.1 million people pass through its gates during its nearly three-year existence. When individuals arrived in Auschwitz-Birkenau, they were forced to undergo a Selektion, or sorting process, in which healthy adult persons who were desired for work were permitted to live while the remaining elderly, children and ill people were taken directly to the gas chambers.90% of all individuals who entered Birkenau perished ââ¬â an estimated 1 million people total.9 out of every 10 people killed in Birkenau were Jewish.Over 50,000 Polish prisoners died in Birkenau and nearly 20,000 Gypsies.Separate camps were established within Birkenau for Jews from Theresienstadt and Gypsies.à The former was established in the event of a Red Cross visit but was liquidated in July 1944 when it was evident that this visit would not occur. In May 1944, a train spur was built into the camp to aid with the processing of the Hungarian Jews.à Prior to this point, victims were unloaded at a rail station between Auschwitz I and Auschwitz II.Birkenau contained four, large, gas chambers, each of which could kill up to 6,000 individuals per day. These gas chambers were attached to crematoriums that would burn the masses of dead bodies. The gas chambers were disguised as shower facilities to deceive the victims in order to keep them calm and cooperative throughout the process. The gas chambers utilized pruissic acid, trade name ââ¬Å"Zyklon B.â⬠à This gas was commonly known as a pesticide in orchards and for prisoner clothing.A portion of the camp, ââ¬Å"F Lager,â⬠was a medical facility that was used for experiments as well as limited medical treatment of camp prisoners.à It was staffed by Jewish prisoner-doctors and staff, as well as Nazi medical staff.à The latter was primarily focused on experimentation.Pr isoners in the camp often named sections of the camp themselves.à For example, the warehousing portion of the camp was known as ââ¬Å"Kanada.â⬠à An area slated for camp expansion that was swampy and mosquito-ridden was called ââ¬Å"Mexico.â⬠An uprising occurred in Birkenau in October 1944.à Two of the crematoriums were destroyed during the uprising.à It was staged largely by members of Sonderkommando in Crematoriums 2 and 4.à (The Sonderkommando were groups of prisoners, mainly Jewish, who were forced to staff the gas chambers and crematoriums.à They received better food and treatment in return, but the gruesome, heartbreaking work caused them to have a four-month turnover rate, on average, before meeting the same fate as the victims they processed.) Auschwitz III Buna-Monowitz Located several miles from the main complex, Auschwitz III bordered the town of Monowice, home of the Buna synthetic rubber works. The initial purpose for the campââ¬â¢s establishment in October 1942 was to house laborers who were leased out to the rubber works.à Much of its initial construction was funded by IG Farben, a company that benefited from this slave labor. Also contained a special Labor Education Department to reeducate non-Jewish prisoners who did not follow camp structure and policy.Monowitz, like Auschwitz I and Birkenau, was surrounded by electrified barbed wire.Elie Wiesel spent time in this camp after being processed through Birkenau with his father. The Auschwitz complex was the most notorious in the Nazi camp system.à Today, it is a museum and educational center that hosts over 1 million visitors annually.

Microeconomic Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Microeconomic - Essay Example Policymakers intervene in the market by establishing market controls. When the government think that the prevailing market price if unfair to buyers and sellers, they enact price controls which involves setting a price ceiling or a price floor. This paper will look at how price ceiling affect market outcomes specifically focusing on the case of rent controls in the short and long run. A price ceiling is "a legal maximum on the price at which a good can be sold" Supply Demand and Government Policies 4). It should be noted that setting a price ceiling can bring two different outcomes in the economy. The price ceiling becomes not binding if it is set above the equilibrium price. The price ceiling is only binding if it is lower than the equilibrium price. However, this situation brings about shortages because quantity demanded is greater than quantity supplied. It should be noted that a binding price ceiling also leads to non-price rationing in the forms of long lines, black markets, and seller discrimination. The primary goal of rent control policy is to make housing more affordable to the less fortunate. Thus, the government enacts rent control which establishes the price ceiling that tenants can charge their landlords. However, as will be illustrated below, one economist says that rent control is "the best way to destroy a city other than bombing" (Mankiw 84). In the short run, both the demand and supply for housing is inelastic.

Transcendental Meditation Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Transcendental Meditation - Essay Example The practice of Transcendental Meditation is one of the varieties of Sanskrit mantras consisted of short words or phrase that when repeated in thought is expected to help the practitioner still the activity of thought and find a deeper level of consciousness. Here, one understands that the basic process of TM is not very different from other forms of meditation, starting with a deep body and mind relaxation for 20 minutes daily, followed by the ââ¬Å"seven-step process,â⬠wherein the first three can be self-taught and the last four, instructed. In order to practice Transcendental Meditation, an individual needs to be initiated by a teacher. This initiation involves sessions of formal instruction, followed by a ceremony in which the applicant makes monetary and other offerings and receives his mantra, selected by the teacher on the basis of the meditatorââ¬â¢s temperament and occupation. As previously mentioned, at least a million Americans are initiated today, underscoring TMââ¬â¢s widespread appeal. Transcendental Meditationââ¬â¢s appeal to people is anchored on its recognition that there is a hunger for spiritual vision in the modern world, particularly in the West, which is, then, infused with the spirit of practicality. Firstly, TM has benefited from the tradition that has been cultivated by the practice of yoga by Maharishiââ¬â¢s predecessors, the Eastern mystics, Vivekananda and Yogananda. Then, according to Coward, Hinnells, and Williams, Maharishi emphasized the practical aspect of meditation instead of its religious context.
